NDP Leadership Candidate and Thompson MLA, Steve Ashton met with the Canadian Federation of Students on October 1, 2009 and endorsed the Target Poverty campaign by signing a postcard calling on the government of Manitoba to implement a plan for a Poverty-Free Manitoba that includes targets and timelines, and is adequately financed, in order to meet the goal of reducing poverty in Manitoba by at least 25% by the year 2015.

The Activist Assembly is community strategy and skills session, part of building towards the November 5, 2009 province-wide Target Poverty campaign day of action for a Poverty-Free Manitoba.
